Christian Arming is one of Austria’s most sought after conductors, highly successful in both the symphonic and operatic field. Music Director of the Liege Royal Philharmonic Orchestra since 2011, he previously held the same position at the New Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo from 2003 to 2011, at the Lucerne Theatre and Symphony Orchestra from 2002 to 2004 and from 1996 to 2002 was Chief Conductor of the Janáček Philharmonic in Ostrava, in 2017 he was named Principal Guest Conductor of the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra.
Since conducting the Czech Philharmonic at the opening concert of the Prague Spring Festival in May 2003, Christian Arming’s career has flourished and he has subsequently conducted many of the top European orchestras including the Staatskapelle Dresden, Deutsches Sinfonieorchester, Radio Symphony Frankfurt, Salzburg Mozarteum, Vienna Symphony, National Polish Radio, Swiss Romande, Prague Symphony, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Barcelona Symphony, Belgium National, Capitole de Toulouse and RAI Turin orchestras.
In North America he has conducted Boston, Cincinnati, Houston, Colorado, Utah and Vancouver Symphony orchestras, and regularly invited to Asia, he has worked with the NHK, Hiroshima and Shanghai Symphony orchestras as well as the Taiwan and the Malaysian Philharmonic orchestras.
Christian Arming’s work has also won many supporters in the operatic world since 1997, when he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival gaining two immediate re-invitations, he has conducted many productions: Britten’s The Turn of the Screw in Cincinnati, Rosenkavalier in Trieste, La Bohème in Lucerne, Salome and Elektra in Verona, Prince Igor in Strasbourg as well as The Flying Dutchman, Don Giovanni, Jenufa, Tales of Hoffmann and Der Zwerg at the Frankfurt Opera. He regularly conducts opera works in Tokyo, most recently Pelléas and Mélisande, Leonore, Gianni Schicchi, Salome, A Florentine Tragedy, Lohengrin and Die Fledermaus.
Christian Arming has a varied discography including works by Janáček and Schubert (Janáček Philharmonic), Brahms Symphony No. 1 and Mahler Symphonies Nos. 3 and 5 (New Japan Philharmonic) and more recently with the Liège Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Franck’s Symphony in D minor (Diapason d’Or) and a CD of Wagner Arias with the baritone/bass Evgeny Nikitin. They have received extremely positive reviews in the international music press.
2017- 2018 highlights include debuts with Saint Louis and Atlanta Symphony orchestras, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, reinvitation to the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra; Stuttgart and Monte Carlo Philharmonic orchestras as well as Janáček Festival. He will also do a tour with the Orchestre national d’Ile de France culminating in the brandnew hall Seine Musicale as well a complementary concert at Salle Gaveau, both in Paris.
