Mihhail Gerts is one of the most profiled Estonian conductors of the younger generation. He has graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and from the Academy of Music “Hanns Eisler”, Berlin. In 2011, he received his PhD.
From season 2015/16 Mihhail Gerts is the 1. Kapellmeister and deputy GMD at Theater Hagen (Germany). He recently made his debuts with the NHK Symphony Orchestra (Japan), Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra (Japan) and Kunming Symphony Orchestra (China). In November 2016, he is going to make his debut with the Staatskapelle Weimar.
During the same season he also had reinvitations from the Orchestre National de Lille (France), Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, National Philharmonic of Russia and Georgisches Kammerorchester Ingolstadt.
In 2014 he was the finalist of the Donatella Flick conducting competition (London), Evgeny Svetlanov conducting competition (Paris) and made his debut with Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin.
From 2007 to 2014 he had a position of the conductor in the Estonian National Opera, where he conducted more than 30 different productions, including Puccinis “Tosca”, “La Boheme”, Mozart’s “Cosi fan tutte” etc.
As a guest conductor he has stood in front of orchestras such as Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln, Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra etc. He has also appeared in Teatro La Fenice (Venice), Teatro delle Muse (Ancona), Mikhailovsky Theater (St. Petersburg), National Opera of Belarus (Minsk) etc.
In 2013, he was accepted into the Dirigentenforum program by the German Music Council and will be one of the “Maestros von Morgen” from the year 2016.
