Juraj Valcuha has been appointed Music Director of the Teatro di San Carlo, Naples with effect from October 2016. He was Chief Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, Turin (2009–16), making a very significant impact on the orchestra’s profile both nationally and internationally.
Juraj Valcuha studied composition and conducting in Bratislava, St Petersburg with Ilya Musin and in Paris. 2005 saw his début with the Orchestre National de France. In the following seasons he has led the Philharmonia, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Swedish Radio, Dresden Staatskapelle, Munich Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Maggio Musicale Florence, Santa Cecilia Rome and Filarmonica della Scala Milan orchestras. North American débuts include the Pittsburgh, Boston, Cincinnati, San Francisco and Montreal Symphonies, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony, Washington DC and New York Philharmonic orchestras. Elsewhere, he has toured Japan with the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
His engagements in 2014/2015 included the San Francisco, Washington, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh Symphonies, as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic. With the Philharmonia at the RFH he paid a tribute to Lorin Maazel with the Respighi Trilogy. He also had debuts with the St-Louis Symphony, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal as well as the Wiener Symphoniker, the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin and the HR Frankfurt. The Rai touring took them to Münich, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Basel and Zurich, with pianist Arcadi Volodos.
2015/16 marked his return to the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Minnesota Symphonies, Munich and Czech Philharmonics. He toured with Bamberg Symphony to the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, Frankfurt and Cologne, as well as with NDR Hamburg to the Bratislava Festival. He also joigned the New York Philharmonic in their Vail Colorado Summer Festival.
In 2016/17 he makes his début with the Chicago Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra, and joins the San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Washington, Montreal and Minneapolis Symphonies. In Europe he returns to the HR Frankfurt, NDR Hamburg, Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Orchestra del Maggio Musicale and Santa Cecilia Orchestra.
On the Opera, he will conduct Faust in Florence, Elektra and Carmen at Teatro di San Carlo Napoli and Peter Grimes at Teatro Comunale Bologna.
